>>AutoClub Speedway now a SCSN Major Sponsor<<
>>Get NASCAR Tickets at a Discount<<

We've hinted about it since the SoCal/SoNev Caravan Organizing Team was reactivated in the Fall of 2006, but, now it's official. Last Thursday, AutoClub Speedway Director of Track Administration, Brian Geye, and Caravan Section Captain, Hib Halverson, shook hands on the deal which makes The Speedway at Fontana the SCSN Section's departure point.

"We've been working with Speedway President, Gilian Zucker, Brian Geye and Advertising/Promotions Manager, Michelle Norman for a while on this and I'm glad we finally were able ink the deal." Halverson told the eNews. "I mean, what a great place to start! The track where three-time Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson, NASCAR's most popular driver (and Corvette fanatic) Dale Earnhardt Jr. and twice AutoClub Speedway winner Matt Kenseth race each year? What has better ambience for our Departure Event? We used the track in '03 and we're coming back to AutoClub Speedway because the size of the lot, the track's location in the greater L.A. area and its proximity to both the Ontario Marriott, our Friday night HQ, and major freeways, make it a perfect choice. As before, Brian's staff is great to work with. We are grateful for the track's support."

Early (real early) on the morning of 29 August, the Southern California/Southern Nevada Section of the 2009 National Corvette Caravan will stage on AutoClub Speedway's Parking Lot #2. After a short Caravaner's Meeting, around 7:30 AM, the SCSN Section Lead Car will roll out of the staging area, turn left on Cherry Avenue and head for Bowling Green followed by 250 or more Corvettes. It will be an exciting day for all and the Speedway will be the perfect place to start it.

But wait...there's more!
During our meeting with track officials, we spoke with Group Ticket Sales Manager, Ashley Chalk. She told us that the Speedway has a great NASCAR ticket package for Caravaners and it's good for both Sprint Cup races this year. Ms Chalk, who, we find, comes from a Corvette family--her Dad owns a really nice C3--says that Caravaners can purchase the "Corvette Caravan Killer Ticket Deal". It's available for both the AutoClub 500 on 22 Feb. and the Pepsi 500 on 22 Oct. The package consists of a race day, reserved-seat grandstand ticket, a pre-race pit pass and parking. All this normally runs $110 bucks but is available to Caravaners for $75.00.

This is an awesome deal if you want to see a NASCAR race--plus, by buying this package, you help our Caravan Section because AutoClub Speedway donates $20.00 to the Organizing Team for each one of these packages it sells. The money will be used to fund preruns, purchase equipment used to operate the Caravan and to cover some of the cost of staging social events. As with all our Section's funds, anything left over after the Caravan is over shall be donated to the National Corvette Museum.

If you want the Caravan Ticket deal and you want to help your Organizing Team raise money for Caravan events, call the AutoClub Speedway at 888-849-7223 and ask for Ashley. Mention "Corvette Caravan", pony-up your 75 bucks then come on out to Fontana for the Cup race. Our money's on the 48 to win the AutoClub 500. Wanna bet against us?

But wait...there's still more!
We have an extra special Fontana Sprint Cup ticket package available on a first come/first serve basis for a couple dozen Convertible owners. For both Cup races this year, AutoClub Speedway needs 43 Corvette Convertibles which will take the Sprint Cup drivers for one, slow-speed, parade lap around the track during the pre-race festivities.

We need cars for the Cup race on 22 Feb. The cost of this starts at $35.00 per person. It includes a race day ticket (prices vary) and special infield parking. Only one person (the driver) can go in the car around the track and one of the Cup racers rides shotgun sitting on the rear deck. A Corvette Convertible is recommended but, if we can't get enough Verts, Targas and T-tops may be accepted. Any model year is ok. A California Driver License is required. We have about 25 cars signed-up already for the 22 Feb. date. "Commander" Brent Hicks of the SCSN Organizing Team is in-charge of this project. If you are interested in providing a car and taking a parade lap with a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, email "Commander" Brent at brent@gyldecauwer.com or call him at 909-948-9990 ext.127.

>>Goodyear Tire Raffle IV<<

Our fourth raffle for a set of Goodyear tires at a deep discount starts February 1st and goes for two weeks. Each raffle raises money for the Caravan Organizing Team. The money will be used to fund preruns, purchase equipment used to operate the Caravan and to cover some of the cost of staging social events. As with all our Section's funds, anything left over after the Caravan is over shall be donated to the National Corvette Museum.

Each raffle is for four of any Goodyear tire which fits Corvettes, other passenger cars or light trucks. The winner of each raffle gets the opportunity to buy that set of tires for $750.00. You can see the various tires available at http://www.goodyeartires.com/

To enter the raffle, on or after 1 Feb 2009, send an email to "Commander" Sherry Maples at caravan2009@cox.net and request entry to the raffle. Your name will be entered. When the raffle ends two weeks later, Ms. Maples will draw a name/registration number as the winner along with some alternates. The winner will be offered a set of tires for $750.00. Once the winner's check is received, he/she will get, by return mail, a certificate redeemable at any Goodyear Tire dealer for the tires.

The SoCal/SoNev organizing team is grateful to Goodyear which donated the tire certificates. Goodyear has been a major sponsor of the SoCal/So Nev Caravan Section for both the 2009 and 2003 events.

>>MSD Now a SCSN Sponsor<<

The Autotronic Controls Corporation, manufacturer of MSD-brand high-performance and racing ignition components and other automotive electronics products has signed a deal to become a sponsor of the Southern California/Southern Nevada Section of the 2009 National Corvette Caravan. MSD also was a sponsor of the 2003 event.

"We're glad to return as a supporter of the SCSN Section of the Corvette Caravan," MSD spokesperson Todd Ryden told the eNews. "Not only do we see the Corvette community as an important market for our products, but we feel a certain amount of devotion to America's Sports Car as a number of MSD employees are Vette fans or owners. In addition, we were sponsors of the last Caravan and wish to continue the tradition."

"Obviously, I'm happy to have my pals at Autotronics back as Caravan sponsors," said SoCal/SoNev Captain Hib Halverson. "I have MSD components on all my Corvettes and that goes back maybe 20 years. Reliable MSD coils and spark plug wires on the LT5 in my 2nd gen ZR1 helped me lead the Caravan to the Museum in 2003 and they'll do it again this year. The cool thing about MSD is they have something for just about every Corvette out there from C1s to C5s. In fact, I'm in the process of redoing the entire ignition system of my '71 Coupe with some of the latest MSD products. We hot rodders love the stuff."

>>Organizing Team Grows<<

Inge Stallings, a member of Corvette Club Santa Barbara, has joined the SoCal/SoNev Caravan Organizing Team. "Lieutenant" Stallings is going to work with "Caravan Commander" Tony Megowan on the Route Book project which, after the first of the year shifted to high-gear. "Inge's background in graphics and design along with the experience her and Husband Bob have in planning past club run caravans for CCSB, will be a big help to the production of the Route Book," Captain Halverson told the eNews. "Because we are not only doing this book for our own Caravaners, but also doing it for Captain Tuna Dobbins' Texas Panhandle/Oklahoma Section, Captain Linda Walker's Central Texas Section and Captain Jan Marshall's Arkansas/West Tennessee Section, the job of producing it is too big for one person. Tony and I appreciate Inge stepping-up...we really need her help."

Fred Smith, also a member of Corvette Club Santa Barbara has joined the Team. "Lieutenant" Smith, who tells us as a retired SBCo. Sheriff Captain, he's taking a "demotion", volunteered to organize the Ventura Feeder Caravan which will start on Friday 28 Aug. from Paradise Chevrolet in Ventura. "Fred, and his wife Sharon, are experienced Caravan operatives who, over his many years with CCSB, has planned and staged numerous club run caravans. Fred also was on the 2003 National Corvette Caravan," Captain Halverson says, "I'm glad to have his help."

Currently, your Organizing Team is:

Caravan Captain, Hib Halverson
Caravan Commander, Sherry Maples--Section CFO, Goodyear Raffles, apparel
Caravan Commander, Brent Hicks--Events Director, Sponsor acquisition
Caravan Commander, Tony Megowan--Route Book project
Caravan Commander, Ron Cohen--Hotel bookings
Caravan Lieutenant, Jim Estoch--San Diego Feeder Caravan "Local Leader"
Caravan Lieutenant, Elora Stidham--Departure Event
Caravan Lieutenant, Inge Stallings--Route Book project
Caravan Lieutenant, Fred Smith--Ventura Feeder Caravan "Local Leader"

>>Registrations Continue to Trend Upward<<

The stock market continues to trend down but our registrations are steadily going up. Does that mean you should sell Stock and buy Caravan entries. Well...maybe.

CFO "Commander" Sherry Maples tells the eNews that, as of 19 January, the Southern California/Southern Nevada Section stands at 189 cars and 337 Caravaners. In early January, we passed 180 cars which was about the size of the 2003 SoCal Caravan.

>>Hotel Booking Hot Tip<<

Some Caravaners who try to make hotel bookings by phone with our travel services vendor, Gorilla Travel have complained about response time. If you haven't made your hotel reservations yet, the easiest and fastest way is by email not by phone. Contact Gorilla Travel at gorillatravel@aol.com The full set of hotel booking instructions are on our web site http://www.corvettecaravan.com/ca-southern/ go to the bottom of the page and click issue #21 of eNews.

Thanks for reading and we'll back in two weeks with #24,

Going on the Caravan?
Don't go braless!

Even new cars with less than 1,000 miles have paint blemishes from normal driving. Imagine what a cross-country trip will do to YOUR paint.

The solution? A "Clear Bra".

It functions like a traditional auto bra but is far more durable and cannot be seen. It will NOT scratch your Corvette's finish like most "strap-on" auto bras. This 3M Paint and Headlight Protection lasts for the life of your Vette. SCSN Capt. Hib Halverson used a 3M Clear Bra on the 2003 National Corvette Caravan and endorses it as the best way to avoid damage to the front of your car.
