>>KENTUCKY DOWNS CARAVAN REFORM<<

"Captain" Jan Marshall of the AR/W-TN Section and "Captain" Hib Halverson of the SoCal/SoNev Section announced this week that a late-breaking change in the Caravan route on the final day will give the group of four caravan Sections (SoCal/SoNev, OK/TXPan, CenTX and AR/WTN) a chance to reform before it arrives at the National Corvette Museum.

This reform, approximately 30 minutes long, to occur at Kentucky Downs, a horse racing track about 25 miles south of Bowling Green and just north of Black Jack, Kentucky, will allow the Caravan to arrive at the NCM together, unlike the 2003 trip when a combination of road construction on I-40, bad weather and no reform point denied Caravaners the chance to arrive as a group of 500 cars.

Halverson tells the eNews, "I'd been trying for months to figure out how to fix the problem we had in '03. Jim Van Dorn, our Bowling Green Scout and I, spent half and hour on the phone a couple of months ago while we both looked at satellite imagery. We looked at a couple of truck stops, some church parking lots, a shopping center and then hit upon this big horse track, right off I-65, just north of the Kentucky line. I asked National Caravan Chairman, our "Admiral," Kathie Summers, since she lives in Bowling Green, if she'd drive down there and take a look.

"The 'Admiral' not only was kind enough to go visit KY Downs but she, also, contacted the track Manager, Jon Goodman, and got permission for us to use the facility's parking lot. Following that our, trusty Scout and Caravan 'Lieutenant' Van Dorn and I worked out the specifics of the route and timing."

Captain Halverson went on to say that, with the fifth day of the trip having no organized lunch or gas stops, by the time Caravaners reach Nashville, there will be no large group of cars. Those going to Opryland will peel off onto Briley Parkway and those continuing to Bowling Green will stay north on I-65. Just before the KY line, they'll get off the Interstate and go a short distance on US 31W to Kentucky Downs. Members of the SoCal/SoNev Organizing Team will be waiting there to stage whatever cars arrive in the 30-45 min. following the arrival of the first car. At the end of the reform period, Halverson will lead the Caravan on to Bowling Green. It is projected that up to 2/3rds of the group leaving Little Rock will make the Kentucky Downs Reform.

Further details will be in the Route Book, presented by the California Delivery Service, which will be distributed in Ontario the night before the SoCal/SoNev Caravan leaves Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

>>FINAL COUNT<<

On 7 August, the National Corvette Museum sent the SCSN Organizing Team the final tally of Caravan Registrants. There will be 233 cars and 422 Caravaners in the Southern California/Southern Nevada Section of the 2009 National Corvette Caravan. "Well," Section Capt. Halverson mused to the eNews, "my original goal was 250 cars, but, considering the bad economy, I guess I can't complain. Three years ago, when I took this job, I was worried about high gas prices and never saw the Great Recession coming. I figured gas might be $5.25 a gallon by now and that would hurt us. In the end, the bad economy had far worse impact on the Corvette hobby than did high gas prices, so I'm happy with 233."

>>RADIO CALL SIGNS<<

The SoCal/SoNev Caravan Organizing Team has announced its radio call signs. Some might think it a bit over-the-top giving all Team Members radio call signs but with hundreds of people all trying to use the Caravan's UHF frequency during the trip and Caravan leaders occasionally broadcasting important information, many will welcome the call signs as a way to recognize an Organizing Team Member's transmissions. The call signs are:

Lt. Steve Nichols (Nevada Feeder) = Orange Leader
Lt. Fred Smith (Ventura Feeder) = Blue Leader
Lt. Jim Estoch (San Diego Feeder) = Retro Leader
Cmd. Ron Cohen = Crystal Leader
Cmd. Sherry Maples = Red Leader
Cmd. Tony Megowan = Brown Leader
Cmd. Duane Stidham = Silver Leader
Cmd. Brent Hicks = SoCal Two
Capt. Hib Halverson = SoCal One

Call signs for the Caravan leaders of the other three Caravan Sections will be announced in either a later issue of the eNews or at Caravanners Meetings on each of the last three days of the trip.

Best Regards,
The SoCal/SoNev Caravan Organizing Team

Going on the Caravan?
Don't go braless!

Even new cars with less than 1,000 miles have paint blemishes from normal driving. Imagine what a cross-country trip will do to YOUR paint.

The solution? A "Clear Bra".

It functions like a traditional auto bra but is far more durable and cannot be seen. It will NOT scratch your Corvette's finish like most "strap-on" auto bras. This 3M Paint and Headlight Protection lasts for the life of your Vette. SCSN Capt. Hib Halverson used a 3M Clear Bra on the 2003 National Corvette Caravan and endorses it as the best way to avoid damage to the front of your car.
