Oklahoma & Texas Panhandle

Greetings to all interested in the 2009 Caravan!

Susan and I will be heading up the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandle part of the '09 Caravan. We hope those of you that pass through Oklahoma will enjoy the time spent here and that those of you going with us to Bowling Green for the 15th Anniversary Celebration, September 3-5, will have a great time.

This is our first time to be Captains for a Caravan. We participated in the '99 Caravan out of southeast Texas with Dorothy Crocker and we worked the '03 Caravan stopover here in Oklahoma City. We did not get a chance to participate with the Caravan in '03, although Tuna drove ahead to Bowling Green and volunteered at the Museum most of the week.

Both the Southern California (SoCal) and Arizona-New Mexico caravans will be passing through Oklahoma on the way to Bowling Green - but at different times. In previous caravans, the Oklahoma group has joined up with the California group and that will be the way it works this time also. That can be pretty cool as that puts a couple of hundred Corvettes (or more) on the road at one time.

The SoCal Caravan is scheduled to arrive in Oklahoma City Monday September 1st. Their Captain has indicated that they want to see more of Oklahoma this time. So, Tuesday morning, we will lead the caravan along Route 66 between Oklahoma City and Bristow, OK (outside Tulsa) before heading southeast away from Route 66 and returning to I-40. Lunch will be in Checotah, OK (home of Carrie Underwood), then we'll pick up I-40 again and join up with the Arkansas caravan in Alma, AR about mid-afternoon and follow them to Little Rock for an overnight stay. The next morning, the SoCal, OK and AR caravans will depart Little Rock for Bowling green. We'll probably follow I-40 to Nashville then turn north on I-65 to Bowling Green.

The Arizona-New Mexico caravan captain has indicated that they will be arriving in Oklahoma City on Tuesday and departing Wednesday for Tennessee. This group is planning a direct route across Oklahoma and Arkansas to Jackson, Tennessee so that a short drive is all that is needed on Thursday to get to Bowling Green.

This gives participants from the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma area two options for joining the Caravan and two different arrival days and routes.

Susan and I are members of the Central Oklahoma Corvette Club. If you're a member of a different club and would like to get your club involved with the planning for Oklahoma and Texas Panhandle part of the Caravan, please let us know and we'll be happy to share. We want all Oklahoma clubs and Corvette owners involved. We've started working with representatives of a few clubs already. If you want to be involved, contact us or your local club.

Stay tuned here for more information.
